At Wit’s End: Seemed to Help

A note from wit’s end. I don’t know if they read it, but they act like they understand. Grateful. ~ by Katheryn Laible

I have three creative, curious, active children. They are mostly grown now, but my goodness! That was a lot. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

For a long time, the biggest thing was just keeping them all physically alive. Soon enough, though, they seemed to more or less get a basic sense of what that entailed for themselves, and really leaned into the social emotional aspects of things. Oh my goodness.

One day at my wit’s end…after days and days of starting out days intending to be patient and wise, and ending days like the mom from “Malcolm in the Middle,” screaming, frustrated and hardly rising above their levels.

I sat.

I took breaths.

I grabbed a marker and paper.

I wrote something like this…I think I have the original somewhere…not sure if this is it…
But I wrote it. I stormed down the hallway. I plastered it to the wall:

**STOP**
What’s Happening?

How am I reacting?

How are my actions influencing others to act?

Am I making things

Better? or Worse?

What will I do now?

Make it better!!!

I glared. I stormed out. I let them steep a while.

I don’t know if they read it or if they remember it, or remember myself how things went immediately after, but to this day they seem to act like they think about it; like they get the logic of kind, constructive empathy in an ecosystem, and they choose to improve the environment. It’s a lot nicer and more enriching this way. I enjoy their company and they appreciate each other. It seems to reverberate around them.

I am grateful.

Hope it helps.

May God Bless Everyone.

Honoring Firefly’s Light: Love you, Jim

Photo of Jim outside our old location soon after our tremendous effort to build the gallery by Katheryn Laible

Thank you, Joanne Kountourakis of the Northport Journal for this beautiful article about Jim Darcy, who passed on at the very beginning of March. Jim was a founding Firefly and a dear friend to most everyone he met. One of our brightest, most enthusiastic lights, Jim embodied this institution’s very heart and soul. We are all better people for having known him.

There is more to say than I can bring myself to right now. A true artist’s’ artist, Jim exemplified creativity and determined optimism. He served as a testament to the fact that the toughest men in the world are also the kindest. His stories were incredible. His enthusiasm contagious. We miss him dearly, and seek to ensure that the spirit he imbued us with fills the hearts and minds of creatives evermore.

A CELEBRATION OF LIFE will be held April 26, from 2-5pm at The Firefly Artists, 90 Main St., Northport

A SCHOLARSHIP FUND has been established, reflecting Jim’s deep belief in the power of the arts and his passion for encouraging people to pursue their creative interests.

A CALL FOR DARCY ART: As part of the celebration, and in hopes that some may be so kind as to allow the family to make digital copies, we are inviting owners of Jim Darcy artworks to show them in our windows for the last two weeks of April.

Please email events@thefireflyartists.com to inquire.

The First Clue We Were Friends

Life With Jim

I was grateful to get to do a solo show at Moksha Cafe (formerly Portofino) in Northport that was dedicated to Jim. In writing about that we shared a little bit about what it was like to be his friend.

Oh, my dear, dear friend. How blessed are we to have had Jim Darcy in our lives? Sweet, funny sailor. Survivor of so many things. There was poetry, plants…so many birds. Chipmunks who came when you called. Never without a new and amazing story. Would that we could have painted for as many hours as you wanted. It would have been time well spent. Thank you for being such a marvelous friend. We are all better people for having known you.

So much love to your beautiful family, and to all who love you so. I’m sure they’re having a great big party up there. May we ever feel your spirit close. Sure gonna miss you and your indomitable spirit. Thank you for hanging out as long as you did.

Love you, Jim.

As always, the Summit was a phenomenal event, featuring over 1,000 local community, business and government, downtown revitalization and community development leaders. There were nearly 20 workshops, 100 speakers, a trade show, and a Youth Summit. The ever insightful “State of the Towns and Villages” breakfast and luncheon alone, were worth the program price.

Check out the News12 Coverage

This year, there was extensive coverage from News12’s Rich Barrabi. Here is a preview, where Executive Director Eric Alexander provided a brief overview of what Vision does, noting that – while their approach is as grounded and holistic as ever — this year affordability is an exceptionally major concern. He discussed how this event essentially engages local leaders from a diversity of interests and perspectives to learn from and work together on a myriad of solutions. Together they make a big difference.

Here is live coverage from the morning of the event, where Eric roughly outlines the depth and range of professionals who attend, and the interconnected issues they address. The entire proceeding is filmed for public access. Fruits of the various panels and other discussions will inform and guide the organization’s lobbying efforts at all levels of government, as well as its work on the ground with an exceptionally broad variety of local stakeholders.

Over the weekend, as a segment on Power & Politics: Affordability on Long Island, Barrabi interviewed a handful of the many elected officials who attended the event, including Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, and Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth adn Valley Stream Mayor Ed Fare.

Huntington Historical Society Celebrates the Season and 250 Years of Liberty

Images from the Huntington Historical Society’s 2022 Apple Festival by Katheryn Laible

Like most things with them, the About Page of the Huntington Historical Society is fascinating.

Did you know that Theodore Roosevelt spoke at the 250th celebration of the Founding of the Town of Huntington, back in 1903? Did you know it inspired a group of prominent local women to organize a society to “perpetuate an interest in things Historic;……in fact all Historic relics relating to the Town of Huntington since 1653?”

This “Colonial Society”, which later evolved into the Huntington Historical Society at first restricted active membership to women. Eight years later, they let the men get involved. Going gangbusters since, they have protected and interpreted the history of our town and the central Long Island region, maintaining five national register historic properties, stewarding a deep and fascinating collection of artifacts, and hosting a variety of fun and educational events.

Come to the Apple Festival on October 5th!

One of their favorite events is also serving as an incredibly rich addition to the 2025 Fall Huntington Art Walk, happening October 5th. At that time, they warmly invite you to bring the whole family to the historic Kissam House for the 2025 Apple Festival!

There, you may enjoy traditional and seasonal crafts and games, including pumpkin painting. The folk artists, artisans and musicians are wonderful, as are all the neighbors who don costumes and explain how life was way back when. Of course, there are plenty of apples, both fresh and prepared in all sorts of ways. The Museum Shop will be open. It’s so much fun!

Celebrating 250 Years: What Does Liberty Mean to You?

Now, we’re celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In honor, the Historical Society is offering LIBERTY 250. From their website:

“Liberty is one of the inalienable rights specified in the Declaration of Independence.

The Pledge of Allegiance promises Liberty for all.

Patrick Henry demanded Liberty or Death.

Share your thoughts as part of Liberty250 – Huntington’s celebration of 250 years of American Independence.”

They will have a booth at the 2025 “Celebrate Huntington! LI Fall Festival”, happening Columbus Day weekend. They hope you will stop by then and let them know: WHAT DOES LIBERTY MEAN TO YOU?

Civic Education in Pockets & Purses

Since before I was born my mother has kept in her purse a copy of a booklet titled “American Legacy” put out by the Center for Civic Education that includes the Constitution and “other essential documents of American History.” It’s an idea fostered by my grandmother, a life long learner, both passionate about history and an English teacher by nature. This habit has become an almost symbolic practice: Taking the ideas our country is built on with you as you go, and not forgetting them in the way it’s so easy to do in the modern age.

The Getty Initiative: How a Passion for Arm Wrestling Sparked a Remarkable Photography Program for Local Youth

Getty Initiative Class of 2024
