An Unexpected Diagnosis – 10/3/23

This past July, I received an unexpected medical diagnosis which indicated that I have cancer. (So there it is, the sentence I could never have imagined writing.) And as shocking as that is, I am far from alone, even by the measure of how many other people received that same news on that same day… (almost 2 million new cases are diagnosed in the US each year, averaging more than 5,000 per day.) I can’t help thinking that as we post each day throughout October, there will be another 5,000 members joining this exclusive club we’d all prefer not to be a part of.

As time passes, I am trying hard not to let this new reality punctuate my life, or even my day. That is a hurdle that not always easy to clear. I remind myself to look up and give thanks for this beautiful day, to live it to the fullest. More than any other, THIS is the day we can make a difference. Spare a thought or a prayer for all those on this journey.

I’m taking a photo a day to help the American Cancer Society fight for a world without cancer. Like so many, I have known family and friends who’ve battled the disease, including some who continue to fight. This year, I find myself personally impacted, and it occurs to me that this platform offers a way to channel my passion for photography to help relay a personal journey that may resonate with others. Please consider making a donation because every little bit helps. Thank you for your support!
