What is Unity Fun Day?
For Unity Day, school districts, community groups and neighbors from all over the Town of Huntington come together to celebrate Huntington Station and the Town of Huntington as a whole.
What you can expect is a joyous celebration of community in the form of a local-star-studded parade and festival, including music, food, and all sorts of good clean fun. The entire affair shines a bright spotlight on community accomplishments and showcases the diverse people and programs that make it strong. There will be sincere awards, including well earned scholarships, and an array of vendors and community groups to shop with and learn from.
A Little History
Folks will tell you that Unity Day happens because Dolores “Dee” Thompson made it so. The Unity Parade and Fair was created to bring us all together to celebrate our neighbors, families and local businesses. For over a a decade, Dee and her Huntington Station Enrichment Center worked closely with Town of Huntington Officials and the South Huntington School district, ardently recruiting diverse community members to work together to develop this day.
Though Ms. Thompson has passed, the fabric she wove endures and continues to strengthen. With community members still proudly carrying the torch, this particular event has grown from a local endeavor into a regional event. It now attracts thousands of people, including representatives from Elwood, Harborfields, Huntington, Northport, Commack, and South Huntington School Districts, as well as elected officials, government leaders, scouts, service organizations, law enforcement representatives, religious groups, and not-for-profits from throughout the town.
Last year Arielle Dollinger covered the event for Newday. There are some great quotes in there illustrating the depth of what this event is all about. All in all, it paints a picture of people who really care and who take deep delight in this very special day that’s all about Unity in the Community.
Hope to see you there!
