Shop Local! Northport Leg Lamp 2025

Northport, Oh Northport! So much has changed, so much remains the same. The hardware store, like so many others, is long a treasured memory. Still, the Leg Lamp persists. Here are some of the wonderful folks who keep such flames alight. Enjoy!

Welcome to Northport: The World's Biggest Small Town

Northport’s Main Street acts as the anchor for a small town caught in the winds of modern times. While ever changing, the 1/2 mile stretch between the village’s port side park and the churches at the edge of its Main Street serve as a timeless foundation where folks continue to build a strong, supportive community.

This article offers a guide to many of  the merchants who keep this charming place so vibrant. After reading through, we hope you find time to stop in at those that catch your eye. You’re sure find something that speaks to you!

Giving your support to these and other local shops is a fine way to keep all sorts of magic alive, and to keep the lights on for those who might want to stop in after.

The Northport Let Lamp Lighting

These particular merchants helped support the 2024 Northport Leg Lamp Lighting; a now twenty-year-old, organically-grown, all-community act of love for our neighbors, the performing arts and that old movie quite of few of these folks are particularly fond of. Here’s a link to a full review from last year’s event. This is how it all originally came to be:

Two full decades ago, well before “Small Business Saturday” actually became a thing, the Mayor of Northport was visiting the proprietors of The Northport Hardware Company. Together, they stumbled upon an old gag gift – A Leg Lamp from the classic holiday movie, A Christmas Story. Laughing all the way, they stuck it in the front window, and gave it an honorary salute.

From that quirky moment, the Northport Leg Lamp Lighting has grown to become a beloved celebration of local talent, small-town charm, and our village’s unique ability to unite over something delightfully whimsical to create something truly spectacular. The local kick-line dancers perform, ballerinas sample the Nutcracker Suite, and the Community Playhouse reenacts its favorite scene.  Over 1000 people now come from all over the Island and beyond to celebrate this most beloved “kick-off” to the holiday season.

We should not that, while records are unclear, we’re pretty sure The Shipwreck Diner was always there, from sometime before the beginning, sharing cookies and hot chocolate with all who came.

While the Hardware store is now long another treasured memory, the tradition they kindled has endured, passed from steward to steward as it continued to evolve. When that old building became our home as The Firefly Artists, in 2022, community members asked if we would please bring their celebration of community, art and a good laugh home.

We were honored. A Major Award, indeed!

If you’d like to support the 2025 event, please visit the Firefly Artists Website or stop right in to our 90 Main Street, Northport Gallery! Raffle prizes will be filling our windows shortly. Please support these wonderful local merchants!

ART GALLERIES

The Firefly Artists: (90 Main Street) The Firefly was established in 2011 to create a gallery setting for local artists. The goal was to create a space where all sorts of artists could meet, collaborate, and sell their beautiful creations. Over more than a decade, we have had the great privilege to display a stunning variety of works by well over 400 artists through our Main Street locations and pop-up galleries. We boast extraordinary talent, while maintaining a very down to earth and supportive atmosphere that is unique on Long Island.

Trinity Community Art Center: (130 Main Street) Welcome to the Trinity Community Art Center (TCAC), located in the St. Bede’s House at Trinity Episcopal Church. TCAC features an intriguing array of fine arts, exhibits, adult and children’s workshops and the occasional social event.

ARTISTS

Diana Anton Jewelry Design, Firefly Diana Anton: (90 Main Street) Diana’s work reflects the process of its making, therefore, each piece may contain file marks, scratches, dents, bumps, bruises, and of course the occasional bite mark. My jewelry incorporates mismatched elements, often combining textures, patterns, stones, chains and colors to create a sense of whimsy. Every day, she challenges herself to make interesting, beautiful and unique pieces, expertly utilizing only the simplest of techniques.

Creations for the Home, Firefly Michael Iacobellis: (90 Main Street) Michael is an avid photographer whose primary focus is on capturing coastal and landscape images. Intending to transport the viewer into a world of quiet reflection through his photography, Michael feels his best work occurs when there is a sense of stillness to the scene. He has won many awards for his images including an Award of Excellence given by Phyllis Braff, Art Critic for The New York Times. According to a New York Times art review written by Helen A. Harrison, “Mr. Iacobellis’s handsome black and white landscape photographs balance formalism with palpable atmosphere to produce romantic vignettes of deserted places.” Recently, Michael has experimented with a photographic technique called intentional camera movement to create abstract and dreamlike images. Those images as well as many of his other works can be currently found at The Firefly Artists.

Girl in a Camera Productions (Jennifer A. Uihlein) Jennifer has a varied background in corporate communications, photography, journalism, documentary filmmaking, electronic news gathering, sports videography and management.  As an independent documentary filmmaker, she has directed and edited two award-winning documentaries, and is drawn to social issues as well as historic/personal narrative preservation; films have appeared at various screenings in New York, throughout the United States, and in Australia.

Firefly Jim Darcy:  (90 Main Street) Born in Ipswich, MA, Jim grew up in Rockport and Gloucester, an area rich in the tradition of both fishing and art on the north shore of Massachusetts. The rugged coast and fishing industry influence many of the topics he chooses to capture in his work. It brings him joy and fulfillment to share his printmaking with others, and to keep the old ways and traditions alive.

The Drama Kings  Drama Kings are an acoustic duo playing hits from the the 60’s to today with their unique spin.

Firefly Jan Guarino: (90 Main Street) Jan is an award-winning watercolorist and gifted teacher who works in person and online, throughout the East Coast and internationally. In this, she has cultivated many dedicated students that we have delighted in seeing develop. This work has included inviting some of the very best in the world to Long Island to come teach. It was a privilege to watch her work with these luminaries, while forever continuing learning from them herself.

Firefly Michele Miroff: (90 Main Street) A native Long Islander with degrees in fine art, Michele only fell in love with all things needlework after college. Working with fibers as they evolve into something completely different. she loves the entire process from start to finish. Her work is more of a craft than a fine art, including embroidering on photos printed on fabric, wool appliqué, Russian Punch Needle, needle Felting (“Woolies”), custom cards, quilting, and sharing these skills with others. Working with people is the ultimate reward. When someone responds to her work with “it makes me smile”, she’s satisfied that she’s doing what she was meant to do.

Firefly Constance Sloggatt Wolf: (90 Main Street) “I study Nature first, searching for primary, universal forms and ideas, symbols that all human beings may relate to. Inspired by the physical beauty of my materials, I approach the work openly tapping into this understanding of the natural world and allowing the act of painting to transform knowledge into a visual dialogue.”

Brú na Bó (33 Scudder Ave) Created by Jack Reidy, a local Irishman, Brú na Bó is Gaelic for “Palace of the Cow.” It’s a nod to Cow Harbor and a bridge from Ireland to Northport. There’s lighting, furniture, art, so many things in between. If you can’t find what you’re looking for they are happy to design and craft it for you!

It all began in 1995 out of the converted garage of Dawn Mohrmann. At first, her husband and 4 kids supported the endeavor by helping out at home. Now, the grown children each contribute handmade products to the shoppe while Fred handles all of the assembling, building, etc. Many pieces are literally made “in-house.” Complementing them are others they just couldn’t resist, sourced from other small businesses both local and around the world.

Honoring their Brazilian heritage, the name means “roots” in Portuguese, reflecting a commitment to craftsmanship and community. They collaborate with artisan groups and small businesses, honoring traditional skills while supporting local economic growth. The result is artistry and ethical fashion.

Thank You for Supporting Local Business

The folks listed here helped make The 2024 Northport Leg Lamp Lighting happen, basically helping cover the costs of sound and lighting for the various performing artists that fill our streets the evening of every Small Business Saturday. While integral to this year’s event, they are far from the only shop owners here who make a habit of giving. Like so many small businesses, Northport merchants do SO MUCH for our communities ALL THE TIME. They donate to local events, charities, sports teams and more, often rolling up their sleeves to offer precious time and energy as well. They give local artists a chance and act as stewards of the historic sites that they inhabit. At the very least, they give of themselves to shops that are labors of love; delightful galleries of unique and wonderful gifts, sustenance and experience…It is very worthwhile to take the time to visit and support them. Please do.
